4 Policemen Arrested Over The Death Of a Car Dealer

Four policemen from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the Lagos State Police Command have been arrested in connection with the death of a car dealer, Benson Obode, who allegedly died while in police custody in Benin, the Edo State capital.

According to the family of the deceased, the officers, whose names could not be verified as of press time, were said to have been arrested and detained in Lagos.

The elder brother of the late businessman, Mr. Solomon Obode, told our correspondent on Saturday that the four suspects would be transferred to Benin next week, where they would be paraded before the aggrieved family.

He also noted that the family was briefed about the arrest of two other policemen from the SARS unit of the Edo Police Command.

He, however, said that he did not know the exact day.

Solomon also stated that there were still many unanswered questions over the whereabouts of the N200,000 and ATM cards said to have be on his late brother on the day he was arrested.

He said, “They (police) said four of them have been picked up in Lagos; there were four of them that actually did the operation, that came down to Edo State. Then, there are two that assisted them here.

“No, they (police) have not shown them to us yet, they said they will bring them down to Benin.”

“Definitely, I’m confident (about the arrest)  because I have written to the IG (and) I petitioned the Commissioner of Police here (Edo)‎.

Efforts to confirm the arrest from the Edo Police Public Relations Officer, Stephen Onwochei, were unsuccessful, as calls to his telephone number did not go connect.

The 26-year-old car dealer had reportedly been arrested at his residence at on May 21, 2015, for allegedly buying a stolen vehicle.

He was, however, said to have died ‎on the same day while his remains were reportedly uncovered in a mortuary at the Central Hospital in Benin, two months after several search operations by his family members.
