Former Abia state governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu |
After eight years of inertia in the prosecution of former Abia state governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), some socio-political groups in Abia State have cried out over the stalled process of justice.
To get the case revived, three groups - NdiAbia League, Abia Youths Consultative Forum and Abia Peoples Congress - have jointly petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari to order the anti-graft agency to expedite action on Kalu’s case and bring his prosecution to its logical conclusion.
The former governor, who left office in 2007, is facing trial over his alleged corruption and looting of Abia during the period he held sway as the chief executive of God’s own state.
In a joint statement signed by their leaders, Udoka Nnanna, Davidson Kalu, and Ezinwa Ukaogo, the groups lamented that the trial of the former governor has been unduly delayed, noting that it was high time justice was served on the matter.
“It is shocking that the trial of the former governor of Abia state, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu by the EFCC is still on eight years after he left office. Abians are disturbed by this ugly development” the statement said.
The petitioners said that it was inexplicable why EFCC has gone to sleep, leaving the case hanging for eight years now, adding, “We hope the EFCC has not been compromised on the matter as it is being insinuated in some quarters”.
