Delta State Government has refuted as baseless the reported outbreak of Cholera in Udu Local Government Area of the state.

The permanent secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Sunday Otobo, said that although several cases of "stooling and vomiting were recorded in Aladja in Udu, the incidents were not of cholera.

Speaking with newsmen in Asaba on Friday, Otobo said that samples from patients taken to Lagos for laboratory analysis did not confirm outbreak of cholera in the area or any other parts of Delta State.

According to him, "There is no confirmed outbreak of cholera in Delta State as l speak to you. In some communities, to be specific in Alajda, there were incidents of vomiting and stooling that were reported; and, as a ministry we swung into action to investigate. We have done a lot of job on this; samples have been collected and sent to Lagos for testing  but no case of cholera have been confirmed in that community".

However, Dr Otobo disclosed that the state Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, had directed health officials in the 25 local government areas of the state to be alert and proactive in detecting and promptly tackling any outbreak of diseases in any communities.

The governor directed that the water plant in the community be rehabilitated and reactivated to provide potable drinking water for the community, he further said.

The health ministry has also commenced an enlightenment programme to sensitise the people on proper environmental sanitation culture and healthy living, not only in Udu but the entire state.

"The Ministry of Environment is also going to mobilise to Aladja to make sure that environmental policies that will not endanger the health of the people are put in place, so that everybody in the community maintains a clean environment and also find a way of proper disposal of feces."

"Health is a collective responsibility and the government cannot provide everything. Even if the government provide you with clean water, it is your duty to store water in clean containers and importantly you have to keep your environment clean."
