Faced with mounting criticism that it is not doing enough to tackle rising corruption in the land, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has taken its anti-graft war to the doorstep of the wives of some top-ranking Nigerian politicians.

Vanguard gathered last night that the wives of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki and that of the former Kebbi State governor and daughter of late President, Zainab Dakingari, were the latest suspects summoned by the commission over alleged corrupt practices.

The two prominent women are said to have used their positions to draw huge sums of money into companies which they have interests while serving as first ladies of their Kwara and Kebbi states.
Mrs. Dakingari is said to have been invited by the commission to shed light on over N2 billion said to have been misused during her tenure as the state governor’s wife.

Dakingari was expected to appear before the commission’s crack team of interrogators on Wednesday but she sent in words that she had travelled abroad for Umrah, (lesser Hajj) and promised to report on Monday next week.

On the other hand, Mrs. Saraki, is being summoned by the commission to explain how huge sums of money strayed into companies said to be close to her. She has picked July 28, 2015 to appear before the anti-graft agency.

A statement issued by Mrs Saraki’s private secretary, Mr Akeem Olagoke said, “as Mrs Saraki has no idea what this invitation could pertain to, she has directed an immediate and formal response, to the EFCC, that she will be delighted to assist them with any lawful enquiries they may have, as a law abiding, transparent and accountable private citizen.
