THERE was pandemonium Thursday as students of the Delta State University, Oleh Campus closed down all activities in protest of six students stabbed by unknown armed robbers.
The protesting students chanting war songs earlier blocked the road leading to the campus.
Vehicular and pedestrian movement were restricted as shop owner hurriedly closed shops not knowing what the outcome of the protest will be.
Leading the protest, an agitated Comrade Oshie Ewomazino, President, Student Union Government Oleh Campus condemned the unwarranted attack in its entirety.
According to Ewomazino, “This attack will not go down as other attacks on our student. I lost my trusted friend in such attack last year, now six students have been attacked and are in critical conditions.
“We will march to the Odion Ologbo palace, if they cannot guarantee students safety, then we don’t mind jeopardising our admission because we have to be alive to be in school.”
On his part, Prof. Benjamin Okaba wondered why students should be attacked in such a grievous manner.
“I am shocked at what happened, Mr. Edward Okumaagba informed me of the incident, I had to rush and ensure that the injured students should be saved.
“Okumagba spent his money and I also spent money in giving them first aid and they have been rushed to the hospital for treatments. I want you all to maintain the peace as the University has swung into action at unearthing the perpetrators.
“We share in your pains and we are with you, I will join you in visiting the traditional ruler. I want you all to be orderly as we march to the palace.”
Those injured are Sergine Presley, Amasa Gideon, Ideh David, German Kenneth, Sunday and Humprey Odion, all 500 level students.
Confirming the incident, Delta State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu said, “6 students were injured in the attack, they are in the hospital receiving treatment and they are responding to treatment.
“The command has beef up security at Oleh and environs to make sure we don’t record such ugly incident again. We want to use this opportunity to call on the students to give info to police about this criminals, they are students too & their colleagues know them. It will go a long way in helping the police in curbing crime in Oleh & its environs.”
