2 Chiefs and Security Operative Kidnapped As Pirates Ambush Passenger Boats

Gunmen, suspected to be sea pirates, on Wednesday ambushed two speedboats and abducted three persons along the Ogbia-Brass waterways of Bayelsa State.

Among those abducted were two chiefs from Okpoama in Brass Local Government Area of the state and a security operative.

Sources identified the chiefs as Chief Blessing Wagio and Chief Isaac Akono-Igolo while the identity of the security operative had yet to be known.

The victims’ boats were said to have left the Ogbia waterfront at about 2pm on Wednesday for Brass when they came under attack around Kiberibio area of the Ogbia-Brass waterways, described as hotbed of sea robbers’ attacks.

A supervisor with the state Ministry of Education, who did not want his name mentioned, said a naval officer and a former Chief Librarian in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Chief Jigekuma Ombu-Kieri were said to have escaped unhurt.

An eyewitness in one of the boats, Mrs. Kilete Arum, said  she saw an unidentified man lying face down in the pirates’ speedboat when they were being dispossessed of their valuables.

A naval source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident but said information at his disposal was sketchy.

When contacted, spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command,  Asinim Butswat said, “I am still waiting for details.”
