Osun State Internal Revenue Service shut NNPC & bank over failure to remit taxes

The Osun State Internal Revenue Service has closed down the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Retail Mega Station in Osogbo and four other federal government establishments for their failure to remit personal income taxes of their employees.
The Acting Chairman of the agency, Mr. Dayo Oyebanji,  said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Oyebanji said the establishments were shut on Tuesday as part of the efforts of the state to ensure compliance of federal government agencies with the provisions of Section 104 of the Personal Income Tax Act 2004 as amended .

The NNPC mega station,  according to the IRS statement is owing N27,948,355.30 covering 2008 and 2013; Bank of Agriculture, Osogbo branch owing N43,407,696.55 covering 2006 and 2013.

“The National Centre for Technology Management , Obafemi Awolowo University  Ile-Ife with a liability of N36,578,427.35 covering 2006 and 2013; African Regional Centre for Space Science Technology, OAU, Ile-Ife, with liability of N80,152,412.34 covering 2006 and 2011 and International School, OAU campus with liability of N31,808,820.30 covering 2006 and 2011.
The IRS boss, who led the revenue team to close down the affected establishments said that the revenue service took the step  after it had secured a court injunction to carry out the exercise.
Oyebanji vowed  that all establishments shut would not be re-opened for business until all unremitted taxes are paid to the state government.
He stated  that the revenue service was set to begin  prosecution of all tax defaulters in the state to ensure that they face the full wrath of the law.

He added, “The law is clear on issues bordering on tax evasion and the state revenue service will continue to take the advantage of the provisions of the law to prosecute recalcitrant corporate organizations and individuals.”
