Five people have been confirmed dead, while several others were said to have sustained injuries in a communal clash between two villages, Mazza and Twachiko, in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State, over farmland dispute.

Vanguard gathered that the warring villagers had been at each other’s throat for over four years. It had been managed by the community elders, but matters came to a head yesterday, when both communities clashed, leading to the death of five people.

Beside the loss of lives, several houses, two vehicles, 18 motorcycles and domestic animals were also lost.

It was reliably gathered that trouble started when some farmers from one of the communities, Twachiko, went to the disputed land to farm.
The Emir of Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu, was said to have directed the two warring communities to keep off the disputed land until the issue was finally resolved.

Mazza villagers, on getting wind of the invasion of the land by their adversaries, stormed the place with dangerous weapons and descended on the farmers believed to be from Twachiko village, which led to the death of a youth.

Twachiko community was also said to have mobilised its people and launched a counter-attack by invading Mazza village, leading to the killing of four persons and destruction of other valuable property.

The Emir of Agaie, Alhaji Nuhu, has visited the farmland and the two communities and other villages affected by the crisis, describing the development as unnecessary, especially since he had intervened.

He ordered the indefinite suspension of chiefs of the two warring villages and further reiterated the earlier ban placed on farming activities on the land until further notice.
The royal father also ordered a redeployment of all the district heads in the Emirate council to bring sanity to the area.

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Baba Elkan, confirmed the incident, saying the Police had commenced investigation.

“We are on top of the issue and already, 20 people have been arrested in connection with the incident,” he said.
Those who sustained injuries were said to be receiving treatment at Federal Medical Centre, Bida.
