At least 10 people were killed and 55 others injured after a bus lost control and hit a tree on Wednesday at Chamwino area near Tanzania’s political capital of Dodoma, police said.
David Mnyambugha, Dodoma regional acting police commander, said the accident occurred in the evening as the bus running from Shinyanga to Dar es Salaam veered off the road following a front tyre burst.
Another two passengers, including a pregnant woman, died on Thursday in a local hospital, he said.
Ezekiel Mpuya, the Dodoma Regional Medical Officer, said 27 of the 55 injured passengers had been discharged after treatment.
“The hospital was overwhelmed by the number of accident victims, forcing most casualties to share hospital beds,” said Dr Mpuya.
In April, 50 people were killed and more than 20 others were injured after a bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry in Tanzania’s southern highlands.
In 2014, there were 14,048 road accidents in Tanzania, causing 3,534 deaths and 16,166 injuries.
