COMMERCIAL activities in Ekpan comunity, Uvwie council of Delta State were shut down and residents gripped in fear yesterday as indigenes of the volatile community staged a protest againt the state government.
Hundreds of Ekpan men, women and youths led by the community leaders turned to the streets as early as 6am to raise alarm against Hon. Ovie Agas, Secretary to the State Government, SSG, whom they accused of “undue partisan interference” capable of causing violence in the community.
Hon. Agas contentious reversal order made available to Saturday Vanguard was in reaction to a complaint by one of the former CLOs, Napoleon Iffie, attached to Julius Berger premises now occupied by Nestoil, on behalf of other CLOs, challenging their recent replacement following expiration.
Chief Newton Agbofodoh, the Unuevworo of Ekpan who explained the community’s anger yesterday said, “The SSG erred when he reached conclusion on the unjustifiable sentiments raised by Iffie. In
Ekpan and even entire Uvwie, the rule guiding appointment of CLOs is replacement after three years.
“Government is playing partisan politics with Ekpan community issues. Our lawyers are already filing a suit against the SSG and by implication, the Delta State government. This undue interference is not acceptable.”
