Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos, have smashed a notorious gang of interstate robbers, which specialised in snatching cars.
Two members of the gang, Evans and Benson, were apprehended when SARS operatives stormed Benin, Edo State capital, in search of a Toyota Corolla, snatched at gunpoint from a Lagos-based businessman, Alhaji Babangida Isah, around Dopemu area of Lagos.
Vanguard gathered that the operatives, while trailing a cell phone stolen from Alhaji Isah, along with his car, arrested Demodia, an auto mechanic at his workshop, at 33, Auchi Road, Benin, who was in possession of a stolen Toyota Camry belonging to one Mr Lawrence Oaikhena, of Warri, Delta State, and a Honda CRV.
The Toyota Camry was said to have been snatched at gunpoint from its owner in Warri, Delta State, when a white-coloured Peugeot 307 car with two occupants blocked him.
During interrogation, 27-year-old Evans, who is married with two children, confessed that he was a receiver of the gang’s stolen vehicles.
He told Vanguard that he had received over four cars from the gang leader, Benson.
He also explained that Benson and one Chief Osama lured him into joining the gang.
He said: “I joined because of the huge profit. When I met Benson, he told me that he was a car dealer who buys vehicles from states and he would want me to help him sell.
“I discovered that he was an armed robber when I saw an expended cartridge in one of the cars.
“I also discovered that the vehicles usually had no papers. I deal in Toyota products, so I told him that
I wanted Toyota cars. I paid him N400,000 for the Toyota Corolla he brought and I sold it to a woman for N500,000.
“I also bought a Toyota Camry from him for N350,000 and sold it for N400,000. I also received two other cars, which I was yet to sell when the police arrested me.”
