Ogun State Nurse Arrested By Police for Alleged Baby Theft

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a nurse, Adebola Titilayo, and the owner of a private hospital in Arogun Village, Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state for allegedly stealing a newborn.

The nurse allegedly took the baby away after the delivery, before the mother could recover from pangs of childbirth and was said to have told the mother that she had a stillbirth.

The incident was said to have happened on June 13, 2015 but police detectives attached to Ewekoro Division arrested the suspect on Friday when the real mother of the baby got information that her baby did not die but in possession of the nurse.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, also said the neighbours of the nurse and the people in the community, who suddenly saw her with a baby without any prior pregnancy, became suspicious.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, “The nurse, who took the delivery of the baby in the hospital on June 13, 2015, had  lied and deceived the mother that she had a stillbirth, that the baby was dead.

“She was arrested by the police when the mother got a reliable information about the baby and immediately informed the police.

“The sympathisers in the community noticed that the suspect, who was never pregnant, suddenly started nursing a baby that she could not even breastfeed. They informed the mother, who later reported the case to the police in Ewekoro on Friday, August 7, 2015.

“In the course of police investigation, it has been revealed that the  suspect, a mother of seven, had issues with her initial marriage and got married to another man, whom the nurse wants to have at least, a baby for, for reasons known to her.”

Adejobiadded that the police operatives had recovered the baby alive and unhurt.

He said the suspect had made useful statement that would assist the police in its investigation.
